A successful open day!

The Dementia Friendly Cowbridge open day held on 21st June in the Cowbridge Town Hall was a great success. It gave the opportunity for the many organisations dealing with dementia in the area to network and to present their activities to visitors. Many thanks to all of the exhibitors and visitors and especially Bluebird Care for the coffee and wonderful cakes.

What are our aims?

We want to make Cowbridge a more Dementia Friendly Community.

The world has begun to wake up to some of the challenges and distress caused by this disease. In the UK there are many charities focused on providing information and support and in raising funds to aid research.

Dementia Friendly Cowbridge’s objectives for our community are:

-To understand better the needs of those living with Dementia.

-To empower them and recognise their contribution.

-To facilitate access to advice and expertise that is out there somewhere.

-To help eliminate the stigma that is often attached to the disease.

-To raise funds for the major charities to aid research.

-To help provide safe social inclusive activities.

-To raise awareness of the issues faced by those living with Dementia.

-To assist businesses and services with their response to customers with Dementia.

-To assist with navigating the Cowbridge physical environment.

-To assist with appropriate transport.

-To increase awareness of life style choices that may help reduce the incidence of the disease.

Activities in Cowbridge

There are two major ongoing activities:

Memory Jar Café organised by Madeline & Colin Phillips is held in the United Free Church at 2pm on 1st & 3rd Tuesdays. Come along for a friendly chat, play games and enjoy a cup of tea.

The Golden Oldies Cinema is also regularly held on 2nd & 4th Tuesdays in the United Free Church when good old films are shown with an ice cream in the interval.

Details of the dates of both events can be found on the Activities tab and the posters below.

There will be a Dementia Friendly Cowbridge Open Day in the Town Hall on Tuesday 21st June with representation from many organisations involved with dementia.

We started our Jubilee celebrations early in Cowbridge when some 25 Golden Oldies turned out for their Platinum Jubilee Party on Tuesday 31 May in the Maendy Room at The United Free Church, Cowbridge.

The Reverend Heather Weddell organized and ran proceedings which started with a Jubilee Quiz. Sticky cakes and sandwiches were followed by a film of The Queen’s Coronation and Jubilee Bingo. Once everyone was “warmed up” the highlight of the party was the singing of popular songs of the 40’s 50’s and 60’s.
